5 p.m. Report on the latest in the tropics. (WPEC)

Tropical Storm Michael is producing life-threatening flash flooding across portions of North Carolina and Virginia. It is also producing tropical storm-force wind gusts over parts of Virginia and eastern North Carolina.

Tropical Storm Michael raced across parts of Georgia overnight, knocking out power along its path.

At 5 p.m. Thursday the center of Michael was located 20 miles of NNW of Raleigh, North Carolina. The system has picked up a good deal of forward speed, moving northeast at 24 mph, packing winds of 50 mph. The storm is forecast to move off the Mid-Atlantic coast by early Friday morning. Once the storm exits into the ocean it is expected to regain some strength and become a post-tropical cyclone. The forecast track moves it out to sea.
