Spence not a new Suh on the Dolphins' defensive line
The Dolphins broke the bank to sign Ndamukong Suh four years ago, but to replace him they went bargain hunting.
Instead of signing another high-priced free agent at defensive tackle, they traded a late draft pick for one.
At minicamp Tuesday, Akeem Spence is one of a number of defensive tackles cycling through drills. Spence is wearing Suh's old number 93, but that's where the similarities end. Spence tied career highs in tackles and sacks last year with the Lions, but he's not expecting to take all of Suh's snaps. In fact, Suh was on the field 83 percent of the time last season, Spence is expecting much more of a time share. He says that himself, Jordan Phillips, Davon Godchaux and Vincent Taylor will all play about 50% of the time in the two defensive tackle spots.
Even though he just arrived in Miami, Spence is all ready a leader in the D-Tackle room. He's the oldest player of the group, and he's reuniting with his former D-line coach in Detroit, Kris Kocurek.
