West Palm Beach (CBS12) — One of the first guys Brooks Koepka hugged when he won his 4th major win over the weekend was his Dad Bob. The second hug was for his childhood swing coach Warren Bottke. Both men have seen Brooks' competitive nature since he was in diapers, but his father, for one, has never seen him this competitive.
"He's always been a focused young man in golf," says Bob. "And I think now he's really taken it to a whole new level."
Four Majors in 23 months to be exact. It's a scenario Bob Koepka could never have imagined when he hired Warren Bottke as his son's swing coach, instiling a golf routine starting back when Brooks was just 10 years old.
"He kept moving the needle," says Bottke, as he shows a notebook that he used to detail Koepka's progress as a kid. "It was plateaus, and when you see success you don't go from the bottom(directly) to the top. You see people make steps, and it's a stepping stone.
"he understands the sacrifices that everyone has made," says Bob. "Up through his years coming up, taking him to tournaments, getting him lessons and everything. He doesn't verbalize it a a lot, but he doesn't need to. We all know.
Bottke is now even more aware of that appreciation after being presented a Bethpage Black PGA Championship flag signed by Koepka.
"It says thank you for everything," says a moved Bottke. "You are the reason we have four. You're the best."
"I do see him sustaining this," admits Bob. "And I wouldn't be surprised seeing him ad more majors here in the very near future."
