The Dwyer baseball team is back in the regional final next week, taking on Belen Jesuit, the very team that knocked them out last year. This time they are in the perfect position to move on to the state championships, thanks to the experience of 11 seniors led by this week's CBS12 Athlete of the Week Shane Roberts.

Senior Shane Roberts struck out 11 batters through 5 and 2-thirds in Dwyers clutch regional semifinal win over Jensen Beach.

"He gave up a home run, a solo home run," says Dwyer head coach Frank Torre Jr, "It could have rattled him, but he retired 12 in a row after that. That just shows how far he's come as a pitcher and as a competitor."

"I feel total confidence because I have my team behind me," says Roberts. "My mound presence is just to go out there throw strikes and get the (win)."

And he's earned plenty of those this season. Along with 91 strike outs in 2017 and a minuscule .79 ERA, he has the well earned love and respect of this team.

"He's basically a leader out there," says catcher Dylan Archipiane. "He leads us. When he goes out there we just feel like one."

"When I was younger I was a little chubbier and the shortest kid on the block," reflects Roberts. "I always got pushed around and, not all of the coaches really wanted to play me, so I really had to work hard to gain everyone's confidence and become the pitcher I am today."

And while those early baseball memories have rubbed of on Roberts in a positive way, so has his influence on the Panthers as they make their push for States.

"To have a senior like that," says Torre, "(and a) leader who works as hard as he does in the gym and on the field, it's the perfect role model."

"We've grown up together and we've developed together," says Roberts about his teammates. "And (we've) really created a bond with each other, so that helps out tremendously."
