CBS12 Athlete of the Week- Cardinal Newman's Grace Hundley
West Palm Beach (CBS12) —
Grace Hundley recently scored her 1000th point for the Cardinal Newman girls basketball team, thoroughly embracing her role as the Crusaders only senior.
"Whoever is in the gym the most and works the hardest tends to break the records," says Crusaders head coach Dennis Miles."
Grace ever proven that theory for her entire high school career. She broke the Cardinal Newman record for most three pointers by a freshman, set a new mark last year for most threes in a season, then most recently scoring her 259th career three as a senior, the most in Cardinal Newman history, passing current Boston College star Milan Bolden-Morris.
"Me and Milan were actually super close when she was here at Newman," says Hundley with a smile. "And I'm super happy to finally break her record. She definitely showed me the work ethic and what I would need to get where I needed to go. She showed me what it means to be a true leader on the team."
"She's directing traffic out there when she's at the top of the key," says Miles when asked about Hundley's leadership. "She's making sure players know where they need to go, where they should be, running the plays correctly. We depend on her to try and be an extension of the coach on the court."
That extra effort and passion may stem from the fact that both of her parents are Cardinal Newman grads themselves. Her father Paul played for the basketball team back in the early 1980's
"He's definitely my # 1 fan," says Hundley of her father. "My parents went to Newman, my aunts and uncles went to Newman, so to know that my name is going to be remembered, by maybe my kids if they go to Newman, is just great."
"She's also a very (impressive academically)," adds Miles. "So she's going to decide what she does at the next level, so whatever she decides to do, and wherever she goes, she'll be successful."
