Athlete of the Week: Wellington's Bryan "BB" Williams
WELLINGTON, Fla. (CBS12) —
The Wellington boys basketball team knew to get back to the state tournament, they'd need to ride the shoulders of their senior shooting guard. Not only has Bryan Williams brought them back to Lakeland, he's led them to a perfect 30-0 record. Bryan Williams is the CBS12 Athlete of the Week.
Former CBS12 Athlete of the Week Trent Frazier left a big hole in the Wellington lineup, when he graduated last year and headed off to the University of Illinois.
"When Trent was here we talked about we could still do what Trent does," says Williams. "No one believed in us, but we said we were going to show them."
Williams, known to everyone as "BB", has stepped up, filling in Frazier's position, and his role as the vocal leader on the team.
"He taught me how to push everybody. If we were going to go to states, I had to learn to take it from coach and dish it out as a player."
"Bryan has been the guy we've been leaning on the whole season," says Wellington Head Coach Matthew Colin.
BB now has the Wolverines two wins away from their second state title in school history, and a perfect record. It has been his level-headedness and leadership that have kept the Wolverines from looking to far ahead.
"He has moments even in practice where he demands the most out of players. Even with our record, he still telling the guys that we haven't done anything yet.
"Keep on pushing, keep on pushing," says Williams. "That's what I'm going to do until we get what we want."
