Athlete of the Week: Jupiter's Jake Garland

Jupiter pitcher Jake Garland (WPEC)

Jupiter's Jake Garland made a promise - after losing in the state semifinals last year, the starting pitcher guaranteed to his coaches, that he would lead the Warriors back to the Final Four. This week, his arm sealed that deal.

Jake Garland is the CBS12 Athlete of the Week.

The junior toed the rubber Tuesday for Jupiter in the Regional Final - the Warriors needing one more victory to get back to States. Through a perfect first four innings, Garland shut down the Stoneman Douglas hitters. Through the fifth and sixth, Garland started getting into jams, but the University of Miami commit, who had an ERA of 1 this season, kept getting out of them.

In the 7th, he shut the door - keeping his promise of bringing the Warriors back to states.

"It was a bold statement," said Garland after the victory. "But if I promise something, I'm going to follow through."

Garland finished with 9 strikeouts, and just four hits allowed in the 2-1 victory. Jupiter Head Coach Andy Mook thought briefly about taking him out of the game. "Before the 7th he told me he was going out there," said Mook. "whenever you have someone with that bulldog heart, I've got to go with him."

"He's a trip," adds teammate Dakota Gaillard. "He's fun to play for. We know we're going to win with him on the mound."

Now having fulfilled his promise, Garland has his eyes on taking Jupiter even further, and win the first baseball state title in school history.
