Athlete of the Week: Jensen Beach's Jamien Sherwood
JENSEN BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) —
Jamien Sherwood has been playing football since he was five years old - excelling at every single position he tried. He's now a senior at Jensen Beach high school and everything he's worked for is paying off. That work ethic is a huge reason why he's the CBS12 Athlete of the Week.
Few hit harder than Jamien Sherwood his hits are as hard as his passion for the Jensen Beach Falcons.
"He wants to put Jensen Beach on the map," says Falcons Head Coach Tim Caffey. "He wants to be remembered as one of the best players if not the best player to ever come out of Jensen Beach. But he wants his team to be that way, he wants us to be the best team."
But it would be hard for anybody on the Jensen Beach Football team to match Sherwood's work ethic.
"It takes a lot to be the best," says Sherwood. "It takes a lot to get to the top to where I want to go - to where I want to put myself and my family, friends, team. If it means getting up earlier than everybody else, so be it."
"I give him a little time off and I come here on Monday morning and I hear some steps on my stadium, and it was Jamien," recalls Caffey. "And he told me coach if I'm resting someone else is gaining."
Which is a big reason why Sherwood had over 30 offers from Division One schools, ultimately committing to Auburn to play safety next season. But it wasn't just a football decision.
"They plan on graduating all of their athletes in 3 or 3 1/2 years, so that was a big thing for my Mom," says Sherwood. "100 percent graduation rate for athletes - that was also a big thing."
"He interviewed schools as much as they interview him," says Caffey. "He had some outstanding questions, I had some college coaches that were like, 'this kid gets it.'"
"Coming to practice and being in the locker room is the funnest thing about it," adds Sherwood. "Being on the field with all these people that I love so much, that's the best part about it."
