Athlete of the Week: Benjamin's Martin Weisz

Benjamin lineman Martin Weisz.

Friday night Benjamin hosts the King's Academy, and the rivalry may have never had more on the line for the Bucs. They know they need a win to make it to the playoffs, and their leader in the trenches is looking to pave the way.

Martin Weisz is the CBS12 Athlete of the Week.

"They call us the unsung heroes in the trenches, but never in the spotlight," says Benjamin senior offensive lineman Martin Weisz.

Even without the spotlight, Weisz is hard to miss.

"I've always been bigger than my classmates. I would always outgrow my shoes. I wear size 18 shoes now."

Weisz is 6 foot 6, 305 pounds and is an imposing force on the Benjamin line.

"I've had multiple instances where guys would just stop running when they see me. Or guys lining up next to me would ask, 'How big are you?'"

Weisz has always been a big boy - but he wasn't always a football player. He didn't play a down until he arrived at Benjamin.

"When he got here he was a work in progress," says Benjamin head coach Ron Ream. "He couldn't even get in a stance. But the potential was there."

It may not have taken a lot of time, but it took a lot of work for Weisz to get where he is now. He leads one of the most prolific offenses in Palm Beach County, and has verbally committed to play at the University of Virginia next fall.

But as big of a presence as he is on the Benjamin football team, he is even more so, away from the field.

"He's the student body president, voted almost a unanimous team captain, he runs assemblies in front of the whole student body. He's just a great kid."
