Surveillance video shows boy nearly drown in lazy river
NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WPDE) - Police have released surveillance video showing how a 12-year-old boy became stuck under water at a North Myrtle Beach resort last month.
In the video, two boys can be seen playing near a six-inch suction pipe on the Avista Resort Hotel river's floor on March 19.
The boys manage to pry the safety grate off, with the 12-year-old repeatedly diving into the hole to explore the pipe.
On one dive, he becomes stuck, grasping the top of the grate to pull himself out. His friend also reaches down to help, to no avail.
After the friend called out for help, several adults jumped into the river to try to pull the boy out.
Police say one man knew underwater mouth-to-mouth aid, helping to keep the boy alive until officers showed up.
Once emergency responders arrived, they were able to pull the boy from the pool and administered CPR.
Police say the boy is alive, but won't share any further details on his condition.
The boy's family has asked for privacy.
