Missing dog reunites with family after 10 years

Missing dog reunites with family after 10 years (CNN)

A dog named Abby is back from the dead.

The black Lab mix disappeared after wandering away from her home in Apollo, Pennsylvania, NPR reported. Abby's owner, Debra Suierveld, and her children looked for their dog but couldn't find her. Eventually they accepted her loss and had her declared deceased.

Then, 10 years later, the family got a call from an animal shelter.

"They said, 'We have your dog,' " Suierveld told NPR. "And I said, 'That's impossible.'"

The shelter told her they had a female black Lab mix, according to NPR. Suierveld, who had gotten other dogs since Abby's disappearance — including another black Lab — said her dog was at home.

But the shelter ran the dog's identification microchip and her name was Abby, they said. Suierveld couldn't believe it.

"I was like, 'Abby?'she told NPR, 'I haven't seen her for 10 years,' "

But once Abby rejoined their family, it was almost as if she had never left.

"She settled right it, I'd say," Suierveld told NPR. "The first night, I have other dogs, and they were all lying in the family room like they'd been spending the last few years together."
