RICHMOND, Va. (WSET) — Richmond Animal Care and Control shared Friday morning that a pit bull tied to a pole and set on fire has died.
They said Tommie had just finished having his bandages changed when he stopped breathing. They added that his body simply gave out.
"Tommie was pain free and surrounded by people that loved him when he passed. Needless to say, we are all devastated and angry and sad and terribly disappointed," RACC wrote on Facebook.
This comes a day after Tommie was beginning to show signs of improvement Thursday by getting up and walking from his bed.
On Wednesday, Tommie was said to be in stable condition, but new burn wounds had appeared and old ones had gotten worse.
There is a $25,000 reward being offered for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for Tommie's condition.
The shelter said while they are sorry that they could not save Tommie, they are confident that they did all they could and that he felt true love and compassion in their care.
Anyone with information about the crime is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (804) 780-1000.
