Palm Beach County animal control is stepping up to help the pets that some families left behind when they evacuated from Hurricane Irma.

According to one animal control officer, PBC EOC found 26 dogs abandoned in the Glades. The majority of those animals, 23, were at a single mobile home park.

More distressing, there have been reports of some owners leaving their dogs chained up to trees or vehicles.

Earlier in the day, state officials warned residents to either take care of their pets or cut them loose. Charges can be brought against individuals who put their pets in jeopardy by tying them up during the storm.
