2 teens losing 5 fingers among West Palm Beach fireworks accidents

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla (CBS12) — The 4th of July holiday ended with two teenagers in West Palm Beach without some of their fingers after accidents involving fireworks.

Police said the first of the calls came after 4:30 p.m. when a 13-year-old boy lost three fingers from his left hand while lighting fireworks. He was with other kids outside a convenience store on N. Tamarind Avenue, just south of 7th Street.

About three hours later and three blocks to the north, a 15-year-old boy lost his right thumb and middle finger in a fireworks mishap. He’d already been taken to the hospital, but police went to the scene when someone found a human finger and called 911. The officers recovered a human thumb on their own and took both body parts to the hospital.

Neither of the teens’ injuries were believed to be life-threatening.

Then, after 10 p.m., a nine-year-old suffered an eye injury from neighbors setting off fireworks. It happened in a development west of Haverhill Road and north of N. 42nd Place. Luckily, the injury was not serious.

Finally, early Tuesday afternoon, a 12-year-old boy was taken to the hospital with a wound to his head. His accident happened on N. 18th Street, west of Tamarind Avenue. Police said he was leaning over while igniting a firework in the street when it exploded.
