A man is in critical condition after he was trapped in his truck following a crash in Deerfield Beach.

The Broward Sheriff's Fire Rescue received a call regarding a crash along SW 10th Street at 2 p.m. on Thursday. When firefighters arrived, they found a white pick-up truck that appeared to have lost control and struck a tree.

Firefighters said that the patient was heavily entrapped, and the dashboard was pushing down on his legs, pinning him inside.

Crews determined that the man would require mechanical extraction. Extrication is the process of using hydraulic tools to remove parts of the vehicle from around the victim. This allows firefighters the ability to continue treatment of the victim’s injuries while continuing the tedious task of safe patient removal and prevention of further injury.

Fire rescue said the man was in critical condition, which led firefighters to work quickly to prevent his condition from deteriorating further. As extrication continued, paramedics had to administer several units of blood which kept his vital organs flowing with oxygen.

Fire rescue said the patient is believed to be in his 50’s and was subsequently transported to Broward Health North in stable but critical condition.
