St. Lucie County officials may have to spend $750,000 to buy and install seven traffic lights at railroad crossings along Old Dixie Highway near St. Lucie Village to prepare for the arrival of Brightline.

The $750,000 price tag is a one-time cost.

The Brightline trains are designed to travel up to 110 mph and would pass alongside the village.

County commissioners and village officials discussed at an informal joint meeting last week to discuss these upgrades. The traffic lights would be along Dixie Highway at the following railroad crossing locations:

  • Wilcox Road
  • Michigan Street
  • Rouse Road
  • Torpey Road
  • Milton Road
  • Chamberlain Boulevard
  • St. Lucie Lane

The traffic signals will be designed, constructed and operated by St. Lucie County in 2022-2023, according to documents presented at the meeting.

Brightline will pay for certain improvements, like new crossing gates, but the county will be footing the bill for the traffic lights.

Brightline is expected to resume service in late 2021. Service connecting South Florida to Central Florida is expected to open in 2022.
