STUART, Fla. (CBS12) — UPDATE: The intersection of Kanner Highway and U.S. 1 has reopened following a sinkhole opening up. Officials say the road was repaired and the sinkhole is filled.
A sinkhole has opened up at an intersection in Stuart on Wednesday night.
The Martin County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) said the intersection at Kanner Highway and U.S. 1 will be partially closed due to the potential hazards the sinkhole could cause.
The sheriff's office said the surface hole is about three feet wide, but the washout underneath is much wider. It could expand greater than six feet, officials estimate. Kanner Highway, east to west is closed while one lane on U.S.1 is open.
Stuart police are helping move traffic along, but are asking drivers to seek alternative routes.
Due to inclement weather, the sheriff's office said it's unknown how long the repair will take.
