Reports: Gov. Ron DeSantis announcing Sheriff Scott Israel decision on Friday

Gov. Ron DeSantis will be making his way south to Broward County on Friday.

According to a press release sent by his office, DeSantis will be "making a statement on holding government officials accountable" on Friday at the Broward County Sheriff's Office at 4:30 p.m.

The Sun Sentinel reports that he will be making an announcement regarding Sheriff Scott Israel, but DeSantis' press office hasn't confirmed that information to CBS12 News.

A source confirmed to the Sun Sentinel that Israel may be suspended and replaced by former Coral Springs Police Sgt. Gregory Tony, of Boca Raton, who will be present at the event.

Stuart Kaplan, Israel's attorney, told CBS12 News that Israel will also be having a press conference in response to DeSantis at the New Mount Olive Baptist Church at 400 NW 9th Ave. at 5:15 p.m.

Various media outlets reported earlier this week that DeSantis may suspend Sheriff Israel, who has been criticized for his office’s response to the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High. He has been the sheriff of Broward County since 2013.

He will be accompanied by Lt. Governor Jeanette Nuñez and Attorney General Ashley Moody.
