The Pensacola Police Department has made an arrest in the shooting death of 7-year-old Aniyah Nettles.

Investigators have arrested and charged 19-year-old Corie Thompson with culpable negligence. A warrant was issued for his arrest on Tuesday at 11:30 a.m.

Police told Channel 3 News he was the man found hiding in an alley moments after the shooting. Nettles was shot to death on her grandmother’s front porch at a home on B Street on August 1st.

According to a report, a 5-year-old child got Thompson's firearm off of the floor while he slept and shot the 7-year-old. Nettles was just one of eight minors who had access to his gun while she was sleeping, the report states.

Nettles was rushed to the hospital, but was later pronounced dead.

Office Mike Wood told Channel 3 he is facing several charges including allowing "a minor child to gain access to a firearm" which resulted in Nettle’s death.

"There’s absolutely nothing wrong with having a firearm in the house for protection but you’ve got to keep it in a secure case by law if there are children around," said Officer Wood. "The bullet doesn’t care where it goes or who it hits."

Officer Wood adds Thompson was a family friend who would visit the home often.

Thompson is also charged with unsafe storage of a firearm.
