PARKLAND, Fla. (CBS12) — Parkland strong giving back on Mother's Day weekend.
On Saturday, mothers who lost children during the Parkland high school shooting are giving back to retailers who changed their policies on gun sales after the massacre.
Gena and Tom Hoyer loved their son Luke more than words can describe.
“Luke was at home with me all the time, he was just sweet,” Gena said.
The last few months have been heartbreaking. Their son was one of the 17 victims of the Parkland high school shooting.
Today family and friends are at Dick’s Sporting Goods to support them on a day that's about giving back.
“Those shirts in their on those girls, they're my backbone right now, and they really take care of us, so I love them,” Hoyer said.
As a way to thank retailers such as Dick's Sporting Goods and Walmart for changing their policies on gun sales, Parkland mothers held a shop-in urging supporters to do the same.
A show of support the day before Mother's Day.
“It’s going to be a difficult weekend, so we wanted to change our tragedy to something positive. And we thought this was just one way to do that,” April Schentrup said.
April lost her sweet daughter Carmen.
And while they push for change, a strong bond has been formed with mothers who are Parkland strong.
“Always hope you don't have to deal with loss of your son, so all of us know from our hearts how that feels,” Gena said.
