Neighbors shocked, terrified by couple's gruesome murder

Neighbors tell CBS12 that the Stevens couple often said hello to neighbors, and were quick to offer a kind word.

The impact of the horrific murders of a Jupiter couple continues to be felt throughout the community.

Deputies said John Stevens, 59, and Michelle Mishcon Stevens, 53, were found butchered to death by 19-year-old Austin Harrouff Monday night.

Close friends say Facebook photos show the couple out on the water doing what they loved to do which was boating and fishing.

Family members came by the home Tuesday afternoon but they didn't want to speak on camera.

Many people who say they were friends of the Stevens refused to speak on camera as well.

But other Jupiter residents nearby say the horrific crime has sent shockwaves through the area, including the seemingly randomness of the attack.

"That's even worse," said Gay Lathe,"You don't feel safe anymore anywhere."

Gay Lathe lives nearby and says she would often see the Stevens' sitting together in their open garage.

Lathe said they were always quick to say hello or to give a nice word.

"You think of Jupiter as a quiet little town and to have this happen just miles from where your entire family lives, it’s frightening,” Lathe said,"Anybody involved in this tragedy, my heart goes out to them."

Michelle Stevens worked at Northwestern Mutual in Boca Raton.

CBS12 is told that the couple had been married for 19 years and had several dogs together.
