Missing dog returned to owner, neighbor charged

Shawntavia Nelson is facing grand theft charges in connection with a missing Yorkie, Bella.

A woman is facing grand theft charges in connection with the search and recovery of a missing dog in Palm Beach Gardens.

It all began when Bella the dog ran away from a woman's home in Palm Beach Gardens last Friday. The woman was taking care of the Teacup Yorkie for her vacationing daughter who lives in Fort Lauderdale.

A neighbor, identified by police as 26-year-old Shawntavia Nelson, found the dog and gave it away to a friend in Riviera Beach, according to the police report. But when questioned by CBS12 reporter Thomas Forester earlier this week, Nelson would not say who she gave it to.

The owner of the dog told CBS12 pet detective Jamie Katz of the PI Jamie Katz agency helped find the dog in Pompano Beach. The owner told CBS12 she paid the $5,000 reward for the dog.

Police arrested Nelson Monday afternoon. She's been charged with grand theft.
