Locals gather for vigil for slain rapper
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) —
Tears were shed Tuesday for the rising rap star gunned down in our own backyard.
The rapper dubbed XXXTentacion was shot inside his exotic sports car while leaving a motorcycle dealership in an apparent robbery in Pompano Beach near North Dixie and Sample Road.
The place where robbers murdered XXXTentacion has become a beacon for those in South Florida who appreciate his music. Tuesday’s vigil for the controversial rapper, whose real name is Jahseh Onfroy, drew over 100 people.
“He had his whole life in front of him, only 20-years -old,” said attendee Briyana Aristide.
The rising rap star’s raw and emotional lyrics resonated with many. Attendees say Onfroy battled with depression and his fight resonated with many of his listeners.
'“His music touched everybody, no matter what age or category you are,” said Aristide.
Just over 24 hours ago, Onfroy was leaving a motorcycle store when he was shot inside his BMW i8, which is worth around $150,000 in an apparent robbery. Then two bad guys stole his Louis Vuitton bag, according to TMZ.
The slain rapper went out of his way to help our community. In 2017, he pledged to donate $100,000 to domestic violence victims’ charities. An Instagram post shows the rapper donating PS4s and other gifts to a local foster home.
“He didn’t deserve this,” said another attendee.
