Inside South Florida's first farm themed community
WELLINGTON, Fla. (CBS12) —
A new community in the works near Wellington brings a fresh concept to fruition literally.
It’s South Florida’s first-ever farm themed community. It integrates agriculture into a residential neighborhood.
It’s located west of the Lion Country Safari off Southern Boulevard. It’s named Arden Community.
Their farm is still under construction, but the people who live there can’t wait to use it.
“I love the greenways, the open trees. I love the farm being the center of the community,” says Brenda Helman. “I come here and take figs of the basil and rosemary and I drop it in my pan and it’s good to go."
For her, that means getting mangoes and lychee straight from her trees and onto her plate.
“We weren’t looking for the 55+ community. We were looking for our lifestyle, an active community,” says Helman.
She moved from Broward County into her brand-new home at the Agrihood.
“It’s like a paradise found,” says Helman
She says now that she lives at the Agrihood, she can finally commit to a healthy lifestyle.
They are building a 5-acre farm.
“You know what’s been put in, you know what the ground is,” says Helman.
Helman doesn’t even have to plant the food. The Farm Directors will harvest it and bring it straight to her home.
The Arden community says that’s what makes them unique.
“It’s right from my farm to my table,” says Helman.
The community just opened a few weeks ago.
There are still thousands of spots left.
Once the farm is finished, it will start offering farming classes.
