VERO BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — The Indian River County Sheriff's Office is seeing a large number of drug overdoses. So far this year, they've responded to 138 overdoses and 8 of those were fatal. So far in the month of July, they've worked 19 overdoses.
The sheriff says they are working tirelessly to identify and arrest the people who are selling the drugs that are linked to the overdoses.
Authorities say Poindexter Allen, 44, of Vero Beach, has been linked to several drug overdoses in Indian River County and St. Lucie County.

Sheriff's detectives say during a search of his apartment, they found cocaine, fentanyl, heroin, and $600 cash. He's charged with the sale of fentanyl, possession of fentanyl, and possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell within 1000 feet of a school. His apartment is right across the street from Rosewood Magnet School in Vero Beach. Allen was arrested on July 16.
Jahvon McFarlane, 36, of West Palm Beach was arrested July 13.
He's charged with first-degree murder by unlawful distribution of a controlled substance. Indian River County Sheriff's detectives have tied him to the fatal overdose of a Vero Beach woman in May 2020.
Indian River County Sheriff Eric Flowers says it's believed to be the first case in this part of the state in which an alleged drug dealer has been indicted for first-degree murder in a fatal overdose.
