Witnesses: High-speed chase ends in Riviera Beach neighborhood

Heavy police presence reported in Riviera Beach neighborhood (WPEC)

At least a dozen officers and a chase coming to a screeching halt with a crime scene left behind.

Witnesses say a “high-speed chase” with West Palm Beach police and Riviera Beach police following a pickup truck ended in their neighborhood. That pickup crashed into a mailbox near the intersection of West 14th Street and Avenue R Thursday night around 7 p.m.

CBS12 was on the scene moments after the driver jumped out of the truck and ran, leaving behind a heavy police presence. At one point, most of the officers could be seen lining the driveway up to the house officers had zeroed in on.

Police later blocked off the house while a K-9 went into the backyard. Crime scene investigators could be seen taking pictures and holding evidence markers.

About an hour and a half later, a tow truck towed the pickup truck away and the driver was still nowhere to be seen.

People who live in the area say they’re not used to seeing anything like this on their street.

“Oh my gosh,” said Dr. Lydia Smith, who owns a house a few doors down from the one at the center of the investigation. “My child could be out there. You know, my child could be playing. The neighbors' kids are always out playing, so it could be more than just damage.”

West Palm Beach police say they’ll release information on the case sometime on Friday.
