WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — During a news conference to highlight railroad safety, Representative Lois Frankel (D) called it "a very sad day" in reference to the latest indictment of former President Donald Trump.
"Everyone needs to be held accountable to the law," Frankel added. "I think people need to be patient and trust the judicial system, and let's just see what happens."
Frankel joins a number of Florida lawmakers, including Governor Ron DeSantis, who has commented on the former President's legal troubles.
Perhaps expectedly, reactions from prominent politicians in the state were largely split along party lines, with many Republicans showing support for Trump while Democratic lawmakers came out in favor of the Department of Justice (DOJ).
DeSantis, perhaps Trump's biggest opponent for the Republican Presidential primary, asked why the DOJ is so zealous in its pursuit of Trump but so "passive" about investigations into former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton or President Joe Biden's son Hunter Biden.
In a tweet, Senator Rick Scott said "this sure looks like a Banana Republic." Scott also claimed that President Biden is "single-handedly destroying the justice system in America," and that Biden would "go down as the most corrupt and despotic President in our nation's history."
Meanwhile, Democrats from across the state showed full support for the indictment, with Rep. Frederica Wilson tweeting "our judicial system is alive, well, and strong."
Trump reportedly faces felony charges of mishandling roughly 300 classified documents found at his Palm Beach property, Mar-a-Lago.
