PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (CBS12) — Firefighters battled a blaze at Liberty Tire Recycling along Range Line Road in St. Lucie County Thursday morning and afternoon.
A one-alarm fire was reported just before 8 a.m. The fire quickly escalated to a three-alarm incident.
Six fire engines, three ladders and two squads responded to the industrial fire, according to the St. Lucie Fire District.
Fire Chief Nate Spera told CBS12 News that the fire was sparked by a conveyor belt and moved into an adjacent storage facility.
Two firefighters were transported to a hospital for heat exhaustion, the fire chief said.
Firefighters said their first course of action was to protect the chemical plant to the north of it.
The fire has been contained but fire crews will continue to monitor the smoldering materials through the night.
