Female Uber drivers, passengers call for gender-preference option
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (WPEC) —
DNA evidence finally led investigators to arrest an Uber driver, accused of forcing himself on a girl on her 21st birthday.
The nightmare is sparking fear among women who use the ride-sharing services.
Not only for passengers but women behind the wheel too – whose jobs are to make sure their customers get to their destination safe and sound.
“My last experience with Uber is three drunk guysand one of the guys tried to kiss me, hug me, pay me,” Dilaysi Broche said, Uber driver.
Dilaysi, 30, works as an Uber driver to support her three young children. She said it was a great way to meet new people. Now, she worries for her life after what recently happened. “I catch a ride from Fort Lauderdale, and the guy, he tells me he would pay me $500 to have sex with him. I told him no, and he touched my mouth,” Broche said.
Many female Uber drivers like Dilaysi, and female passengers, are calling for change, so they’re not in fear for each pickup.
Yagnara Reyes is a local nurse, and drives for Uber part-time. She wishes Uber would add a gender-preference option for both drivers and passengers.
CBS12 reached out to Uber to find out if customers can choose which gender they feel comfortable riding. The company responded no. The website states it continues to develop technology that “helps you feel safe” – whether you’re behind the wheel or in the backseat.
There is a local ride-sharing service exclusively for women called Carol Drives. It’s based out of Miami.
Many of us feel more even vulnerable when we’re in a city we don’t know.
But there are even more female ride-sharing apps out there, including See Jane Go, Shebah and Safr.
