PALM BEACH GARDENS (CBS12) — The family of Corey Lamar Jones issued this statement after the State Attorney's Office announced it would send the police shooting investigation to the grand jury.
"While we are pleased to learn that the officer who senselessly killed our Corey will face a Grand Jury for his reckless act, we understand that nothing can bring back our son, brother and friend. Our goal now as a family is to ensure that this never happens to another innocent citizen. In spite of this news, our hearts are heavy. We lost a wonderful soul. But rather than focus on the reprehensible actions of one member of law enforcement, today we choose to celebrate Corey's life. A life which he lived to the fullest, every day. We take solace in the outpouring of support from the people who knew Corey best. His spirit will live on through his music and the lives he touched over the years. While we are leery of the Grand Jury process, we will remain vigilant and peacefully demand greater accountability and transparency from law enforcement."
Nouman Raja, a Palm Beach Gardens Police officer at the time, shot and killed Jones during what investigators called a "confrontation" on the off-ramp from Interstate 95 to PGA Boulevard. Raja has since been fired.
