WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS 12) — When lives were on the line, Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel says the School Resource Officer in charge of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School did engage the shooter and innocent lives were lost. Now the Sheriff’s office is trying to make sure this lack of action will never happen again.
“Every second more people are dying,” said Former Navy Seal and President of Active Shooter Response, Hector Delgado.
For four minutes School Resource Officer, Scott Peterson stood by the building Nikolas Cruz was causing chaos in.
“I feel angry, it’s very upsettingIt’s his job to protect the children and the teachers, everyone who doesn’t have a gun,” said Delgado. Peterson was supposed to be a good guy with a gun, but in this case, he didn’t protect our children according to authorities.
“You don’t think about should I go in this door and help those folks because that’s what’s your trained for and that’s what you believe in,” said Delgado.
He says Peterson’s first instinct should have been to put his life on the line.
“You have to be able to shoot under stress,” said Delgado. Delgado also says agencies should re-evaluate who our resources are and their physical ability.
“Are schools a stepping stone to retirement, do we put the folks that are close to retirement there to put them next to the most precious assets that we have, next to our children, maybe it’s not a good idea,” said Delgado.
