Students at a school district in north Florida will not be going to class Friday because of an email threat.

The Gilchrist County School District canceled classes out of an abundance of caution to ensure the safety of students and staff.

The district said it received an email threat late Thursday and didn't have time to "confirm how legitimate this threat is."

The Gilchrist County Sheriff's Office and other law enforcement agencies are working to determine the validity, the district said.

Gilchrist County is about 30 miles west of Gainesville.
