Drone video from Kevin Cadby captured a 13-year-old boy making a daring rescue Friday afternoon after a boat capsized off the coast of the Jupiter Inlet.

Sam Ruskin and his cousin were surfing at that very moment, just a few hundred yards away.

“At first, we just saw all the boxes from the boat in the middle of the sea, and we were kind of like, 'What’s going on?'” Ruskin said.

The Independence Middle School student immediately paddled towards the end of the inlet and gave the man his surfboard.

Ruskin said everything happened so fast.

“It’s really strong, I was swimming next to him so I was just kind of struggling, trying to get out of the area because you can get sucked into the jetty,” he said.

Ruskin's father, Ryan, said he didn’t know the extent of it until he saw the drone footage on Facebook Sunday morning.

“Just speaks about his character,” he said. “He didn’t even blink an eye, jumped off his board, handed it to a grown man, saved his life. Came back and said, 'Hey what’s for dinner dad?'”

Although it can get very dangerous at the Jupiter Inlet, Ruskin said he'd do it again.

“You don’t want to go where this guy was because you can get sucked into the jetty," he said. "It’s pretty scary if you’re in there because you’re going to be super fast going through the jetty.”
