TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (CBS12) — Governor Ron DeSantis is the youngest governor of Florida to take office in more than a century.
At 40-years-old he’s the state's first Generation X governor.
“I think he’s going to invigorate all the people in the state of Florida,” said Senator Harrell.
Republican Senator Gayle Harrell believes DeSantis will speak to a different Florida demographic.
“He’s younger and he’s got energy and I think the younger generation will relate to him better,” said Senator Harrell.
Democratic Senator Bobby Powell hopes that energy translates into fresh new ideas for the governor.
“This is the first time that a Generation X’er has been allowed to be Governor, so we’re expecting to see some different things in the way operations happen and we anticipate it to be different,” said Senator Bobby Powell.
Democratic Senator Lori Berman agreed it will certainly be different, but she’s excited to see younger faces in the capitol
“We’re really seeing a new generational shift and I think it’s great people are bringing new ideas, invigorating the whole legislative and executive branches,” said Senator Lori Berman.
While DeSantis may be young Berman doesn’t think his age will affect his decision making or his teams.
“Certainly if you have somebody who doesn’t have experience, but I think most of these people have experience. I think 40 years old is not so young,” said Senator Lori Berman.
DeSantis has two young children who will grow up in the Florida Governor’s Mansion.
