The Coast Guard said Saturday it is suspending the search for a missing cruise ship passenger.

Authorities believe 26-year-old Thomas McElahny went overboard the Carnival Victory cruise ship. The Coast Guard receive an alert about the incident at 5 a.m. on Friday.

Kimberly Wyatt, the news director at WEAR-TV, our sister station in Pensacola, shared a photo of McElhany as the cruise ship circulated his photo on monitors during the initial search.

The Coast Guard says it has been in touch with McElhany's family.

“I have been in contact with members of Mr. McElhany’s family throughout our search efforts and know this is a very difficult and painful time for them,” said Cmdr. David Aldous, Coast Guard 7th District search and rescue mission coordinator. “Suspending a search is one of the most difficult decisions we have to make as first responders, and it is never made lightly.”

Crews from Miami and Key west took part in the search, which covered some 2,086 miles in 32 hours.
