Children found wandering in road, woman charged
LANTANA, Fla. (CBS12) —
A woman made a startling discovery this week while taking her daughter to the school bus stop in Lantana.
According to a report from Lantana Police, the woman found two children wandering all by themselves in the middle of the road on Tuesday morning. She scooped them up and called 911.
It happened at West Drew Street and East Coast Avenue, near Palm Beach Maritime Academy. The first officer on scene noted heavy traffic at the intersection. The officer also recognized the young children from previous encounters and knew they lived nearby.
A man approached the officers on scene and told police a woman named Amy Ehret had custody of the children, who appeared to be around two years old, according to the report. The man said Ehret, or family members, normally take the children to a day care facility in Boynton Beach.
Police called Ehret and she said she dropped off the kids at a house and assumed someone's mom would be home to watch them, according to the report. Police said Ehret refused to come to the scene. She told the officer, "I don't feel like dealing with this drama right now," and hung up the phone.
Officers arrested Ehret on Wednesday on two counts of child neglect.
The Department of Children and Families is investigating the matter as well.
