WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — The family of a South Florida woman who disappeared while on a birthday getaway to Costa Rica has confirmed a body found is that of 36-year-old’Carla Stefaniak.
According to the “Finding Carla” Facebook page, her father identified the body as his daughter’s around 11:30 PM.
The Broward County woman has been missing for more than a week after traveling to Costa Rica with her sister-in-law to celebrate her birthday.
She was last heard from around 8:00 PM November 27th and didn’t show up for her 1:00 PM flight home the next day.
On Monday night, 32-year-old Bismarck Espinoza Martínez, a security guard at the Airbnb vacation rental Stefaniak was staying at, was arrested in connection to her murder.
This after search dogs found a partially buried female body covered with plastic bags in a wooded area near the Airbnb property.
Investigators say an autopsy showed Stefaniak was stabbed to death with injuries to her neck and upper torso.
She also suffered a blow to the head.
Costa Rican authorities say they arrested Martínez after they found blood in his room; his testimony also did not match surveillance video or information gathered from other witnesses.
Carla’s family says their search for answers is far from over.
According to the “Finding Carla” Facebook page, they plan to release what they call ‘digital leads’ in the coming days.
They say they plan to do whatever it takes to get justice for Carla.
