BELLE GLADE, Fla. (CBS12) — Nine people went to the hospital following a chemical leak that put two schools in Belle Glade on lockdown as a precaution.
Belle Glade Elementary School and Lake Shore Middle School went into lockdown as the fire department investigates the chemical leak at a nearby off-campus location, according to a message sent out to parents by the School District of Palm Beach County on Wednesday.
The leak occurred at the Pioneer Growers plant on 227 Ave. The chemical involved was Chlorine Dioxide, which is used to sanitize and extend the shelf-life of fruits and vegetables by destroying bacteria, viruses, yeasts, and molds. The fire department has identified the source of the fumes and have resolved the issue, and both schools are set to resume normal activities.
