Two people were seriously injured in a bad crash over the weekend, Delray Beach police said.

The crash happened Saturday night at the intersection of Congress Avenue and SW 10th Street.

Police say the driver of a Hyundai was heading north on Congress and the driver of a Mercedes was heading south on Congress, trying to head east on SW 10th Street when the cars crashed into each other.

The Mercedes crashed into a concrete pole, according to police. The Hyundai's damage was so intense, the engine and transmission separated from the vehicle and ended up in the middle of the road.

Both drivers are still in the hospital with serious injuries. There were no passengers, according to police. Congress Avenue was shut down for several hours. The investigation is underway to see if speed or other factors played a role in the crash.
