1 killed, 6 injured when car plows into pack of 14 cyclists in Davie

A morning bike ride turned deadly Sunday when a car plowed into a pack of 14 cyclists, killing one and injuring six along State Road 84, police say.

One cyclist was critically injured and had to undergo surgery, said Sgt. Mark Leone, a spokesman for the Davie Police Department.

Five others had minor injuries, including a teen.

Police were not releasing the names of the driver or victims on Sunday.

The crash happened around 8:30 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of SR 84 east of Southwest 148 Avenue, Leone said.

The driver told police she was distracted by something in her car, a black Honda Fit.

“The sun was in her eyes,” Leone said. “She didn’t see the bicyclists. She just felt the impact. We don’t believe speed, drugs or alcohol were involved.”

Eastbound State Road 84 was closed for hours from Weston Road all the way east to SW 136 Avenue so police could investigate the accident and clear the scene.

At noon, officers were still investigating the accident.

The driver’s car sat in a lane on State Road 84, its windshield and roof caved in. Nearby sat two crumpled road bikes.
