Faces of Black History: Bessie Coleman

Faces of Black History: Bessie Coleman

CBS12 is celebrating Black History Month all month long by bringing you the faces of black history.

We start with Bessie Coleman, who was born in Atlanta, Texas in 1892. While living in Chicago, she became infatuated with World War I pilots.

She was denied entry into American flight schools, so she taught herself French and moved to France to study.

Coleman became the first black woman to hold a pilot's license and the first African American woman in America to make a public flight.
