As we move into peak hurricane months, Florida now faces a 61-percent chance of getting hit, according to the News Service of Florida.

Researchers have estimated that there will be 16 named storms, eight hurricanes, and three major hurricanes.

The "major" hurricanes are projected to be at least a Category 3 with winds up to 111 mph.

There have been five named storms in the Atlantic Ocean so far, including the most recent Tropical Storm Emily which impacted south Florida this week.

The predicted above average storm season is due in part to anomalously warm waters in the Atlantic, News Service of Florida says.

The new 61 percent predicted is higher compared to the historical average of 51 percent.
