CBS12 Athlete of the Week: Pahokee QB Tyrone Smith
Pahokee (CBS12) —
The Pahokee Football Team, who won six State Titles between 1989 and 2008, is getting ready to take on Trenton in the second round of the playoffs. This week's Athlete of the Week, quarterback Tyrone Smith, hopes all his hard work will give his team a chance to get back in the State Championship spotlight.
"(It takes) hard work," says Smith of his success so far this season. "Going hard everyday. No days off. (Lots of) studying."
Smith has been playing football for years, but heading into his senior season he decided to devote himself to being a student of the game.
"Tyrone has kind of committed himself this year," says Pahokee head coach Orson Walkes. "He's taking things as they come. He's analyzing them, and he's become a pretty good decision maker."
The 6-foot-3 QB is still perfecting his craft, even after leading his team to a perfect season so far. The Blue Devils enter the second round of the playoffs with perfect 11-0 record.
"The game last year was kind of fast," explains Smith. "And now it's slowed down a lot because I've learned a lot so it's slowed down and it's so much fun."
"Leadership (wise) he's taking it more seriously," says his Pahokee teammate Tyron Arnett. "He's going to go all out and just try to win it all in his last year."
He's taking it to the limit with the same teammates he's played with since he was a little kid.
"They mean so much to me," says Smith. "When I get on the field I can't let them down. Gotta go hard every play."
"He doesn't say to much," says Walkes. "He just works, and he's all about his action. So from that standpoint, I think he's helped a lot of younger guys. (It's his) work ethic."
