Athlete of the Week: Wellington's Lauryn Auger
WELLINGTON, Fla. (CBS12) —
The Wellington soccer team lost to rival Boca Raton in double overtime of the regional semifinals last year, a loss that still stings 10 months later.
But the Wolverines are back and even better this season, thanks to the leadership of their vocal midfielder. Lauryn Auger is the CBS12 Athlete of the Week.
"We knew everyone had a year left," says Auger. "And we knew we'd have another chance."
Auger is the leader of Wellington's talented senior class, that's gunning for the school's first state title since 2008.
"She doesn't stop," says Wellington goaltender Alexa Kovi. "She's always positive. She doesn't quit during the game."
"She's definitely a vocal presence on the field," says Wellington midfielder Samantha Sullivan. "You can always hear her communicating."
Auger has the Wolverines undefeated through 8 games, and outscoring their opponents 46-2.
"Everyone loves being here every day," says Auger. "It makes it memorable for your senior year."
"She's a great presence both on and off the field," adds Sullivan. "One of the nicest people I've ever met."
Auger is a math tutor, a member of the school's super competitive marketing club, and a very strong student. She's not quite sure what she's going to pursue in college, but she's not expecting to play soccer.
That's what makes this year so important. One last chance for a state championship, and, likely one more shot at beating Boca.
"This is my last senior year of soccer," says Auger. "I'm never going to get this back. It's awesome to think that we can make this the best year yet. It can be memorable and talked about for years to come. Hopefully, it happens."
