Athlete of the Week: Jupiter's Ally Costa

Last season Ally Costa was the surprise star in Palm Beach County - winning a number of Player of the Year awards for big school softball.

This year everyone sees the Jupiter High senior coming - and she is not backing down from having a target on her back. Ally Costa is the CBS12 Athlete of the Week.

As a sophomore, Costa donned the blue and orange of Palm Beach Gardens - but she's found success for the Gators' biggest rival.

Tuesday, she helped Jupiter beat Gardens for the third time in a year and a half - but that's just the tipping point of what she's accomplished for the warriors.

"She's a competitor," says Jupiter Softball Coach Steve Ahearn. "She comes at you every pitch."

Last year she went 24-4, struck out 232 batters and fired 10 shutouts as a junior.

As a senior, she's now even better - fresh off a perfect game last week against Royal Palm Beach.

"It's a cool feeling," says Costa. "But I want to get to states even more."

That competitiveness is what pushes Costa toward greatness, that and a bond with her catcher, Ashley Goebel, who she's worked with since she was 8 years old.

"We think the same thing," says Goebel. "If she misses a pitch, we know just what to do after that."

A bit of a jokester off the field, Costa knows when to to turn the switch on. And when she's on, she's unbeatable.

"Everything about pitching I love," says Costa. "Even in the hard situations, those are the best moments."

"Ally is Ally, what can you say?" says Ahearn. "But when she gets out there, you can count on her."
