Athlete of the Week: Glades Central's Davius Richards
Over the past year we've watched James Blackman go from quarterback at Glades Central to a true freshman starting quarterback at Florida State. This year's starting quarterback at Glades Central, Davius Richards knew he'd have big shoes to fill - but he's pulling it off extremely well - and he's this week's CBS12 Athlete of the Week.
"No question about it, I think he's the guy to lead us where we want to go." - High praise from former NFL wide receiver and Glades Central Head Coach Jessie Hester, who's given all three of his quarterbacks a chance, but has watched Davius Richards gain more and more confidence.
"He always had a live arm," says Hester. "But he was a kid who was always down on himself. He got into a game and made a couple of throws and you could kind of see his confidence grow from there."
Richards threw two touchdown passes and connected on several other big plays in Friday's huge win over American Heritage, what was a must win game to boost the Raiders chances of making the playoffs in Class 4A .
"It made me feel good, it made me feel like we're making progress," says Richards. "Like each day each week we're coming out better and better, and you can see it on the field."
And Richards is making strides in the classroom as well - a 3-plus GPA with big dreams of playing college football.
"I wasn't given everything. Me and my family came up in the tough, so I can do my best to get them out of their situation. It's gotta be more than football because I'm not just going there to play football, I need an education.
"All the kids believe in him and all the kids are behind him," adds Hester. "And that's what you want."
"To anybody else we're probably the underdogs," says Richards. "But I take that as an advantage, because they don't expect us to play good, but we're going to come out great."
