17-year-old hiker killed by falling tree
EDMONDS, Wash. (CBS12) —
A teenager from Washington has died after being hit by a tree Friday afternoon, according to our CNN affiliate KCPQ.
KCPQ reports that a 17-year-old girl and her friends had just begun their hike at Hikes Meadowdale Beach Park in Edmond, Wash. when the tree fell on the girl.
"We were dispatched at around 2:45 for a report that a tree had fallen on a hiker in Meadowdale Beach Park," Snohomish County Fire District's Leslie Hynes told reporters. "She was part of about seven teenagers that were hiking together in the park."
Deputies say that the group of friends heard a "snap" just moments before the tree collapsed on the 17-year-old.
The other teens told KCPQ and authorities that they tried to lift the tree off of their friend but were unsuccessful. Responding crews pronounced the girl dead at the scene.
Authorities have closed the park while they continue their investigation. KCPQ reports that Snohomish County Parks and Recreation will decide when it reopens.
