Zoo needs volunteers for the Stacey Konwiser Memorial run

The Palm Beach Zoo is looking for volunteers for a big event this weekend.

The zoo is hosting the Stacey Konwiser Memorial Save the Tiger 5K run. It is a benefit to help support a partnership with WCS at Endau Rompin National Park in Malaysia to protect tigers and their habitat.

The zoo estimates there are fewer than 250 Malayan tigers left in the wild.

The memorial run will take participants past the Tiger River exhibit, home to two of the zoo's tigers.

Stacey Konwiser was mauled and killed by an endangered Malayan tiger last year, the first fatal tiger attack in the zoo’s history.

The zoo has implemented a number of changes since the attack. Those include additional training for zookeepers, new cameras and doors and a 2-key entrance system to ensure the safety of employees when working around the animals.

You can visit the zoo's website to register for the run. The event begins at 7:30 a.m. Saturday.
