Teddy the stolen dog is recovering
PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (CBS12) —
Teddy, the Maltese mix, stolen from the Petco in Legacy Place in Palm Beach Gardens Saturday, has been found and is recovering at a veterinary clinic.
Police found the dog early Tuesday morning and have arrested 48 year old Heather Ryan for grand theft in the incident.
Teddy’s owner, Tara Cameron- Harris, couldn’t describe the feeling when Palm Beach Gardens Police called her around 3:30 in the morning to tell her they found Teddy.
“I didn’t know if he was alive or dead,” said Cameron-Harris. “When we heard the news, we just jumped in the car and rushed out to the Palm Beach Gardens Police Department.”
Soon after the family brought Teddy home, they noticed he was sick. He tried to walk and was visibly wobbling and dazed. They rushed him to the emergency veterinarian clinic.
The 11-year-old Maltese Yorkey mix is blind, diabetic and had missed over a half a dozen insulin shots.
Police recovered Teddy outside the home of Heather Ryan, the woman Palm Beach Gardens Police were calling a “person of interest.”
Cameron-Harris says one of Ryan's neighbors called police because she was acting suspicious.
Police say it was Ryan who took Teddy from the PETCO in Legacy Place after the dog got a hair cut. She paid for the services rendered and left with Teddy.
“We’re just so happy right now,” says Cameron-Harris.
Teddy will remain at the vet hospital for the next couple of days. However, he is expected to make a full recovery.”
Petco released a statement that reads:
We’re so happy that Teddy was found and safely reunited with his family, and we’re doing everything we can to help them recover from this distressing experience. We’re continuing our thorough investigation of the situation, reinforcing the critical importance of adhering to all of our pet safety policies and procedures with our partners, and looking into any potential measures that may prevent this from happening again.
