Elizabeth Thomas and Tad Cummins found at remote California cabin after tip

Elizabeth Thomas, 15, has been the focus of a nationwide search since March 13 when the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation issued an Amber Alert. Tad Cummins has been arrested.

Investigators say a tip from someone in the community in California led to the safe recovery of 15-year-old Elizabeth Thomas and her former teacher who is accused of kidnapping her more than a month ago in Tennessee.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation arrested Tad Cummins and rescued Elizabeth Thomas at a remote cabin in Cecilville, California. Investigators believe the two had been living there for the past 10 days.

Deputies from the Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office acted on the tip and located a Nissan Rogue that had also been part of the nationwide Amber Alert. Deputies put it under surveillance for several hours before rescuing Elizabeth Thursday morning.

Cummins, 50, was her former teacher. He was fired amid an investigation into allegations of an inappropriate contact. He had been placed on the TBI’s Top 10 Most Wanted List with warrants for sexual contact with a minor and aggravated kidnapping. The TBI says he is facing a new federal charge of transportation of a minor across state lines.

Elizabeth Thomas, 15, has been the focus of a nationwide search since March 13 when the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation issued an Amber Alert.

Two days later, investigators said the two were spotted at a Walmart in Oklahoma City.

Authorities released video of the two inside the store, but Cummins hadn't been seen since until now.

Elizabeth is scheduled to fly on a TBI aircraft back to Tennessee at an undisclosed time. Cummins should follow, but it could take several weeks for his extradition.
